Rexhepi told the press he had handed his resignation to the prime minister and Kosovo's parliament because he felt this was the way those responsible in a democracy should behave.
He said that Saturday's events had made the security situation in Kosovo more difficult, and called on citizens and institutions to reaffirm their maturity and keep the necessary peace so that the national interest -- Kosovo's independence -- could be accomplished.
Two activists of the Self-Determination movement died and a dozen were injured in clashes between demonstrators and police in Pristina on Saturday, when the movement organised protests against UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari's plan for Kosovo, dissatisfied with the fact that the plan does not explicitly mention the province's independence.
