Rugova, who died of lung cancer at the age of 61, was Kosovo's first pro-independence leader and later, after this Serbian breakaway province was placed under U.N. protection in 1999, was voted the province's first president. He led Kosovo's largest party Democratic League of Kosovo for 17 years.
The incumbent Kosovo officials visited Rugova's grave in Pristina on Sunday morning and citizens later came to pay respects to to their leader.
