ZAGREB, Jan 31 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament on Wednesday afternoon opened a discussion on reports on the programmes and the financial performance of the public broadcasting corporation HRT in 2005.

Presenting the reports, the chairman of the HRT programmes council, Zdenko Ljevak, said that the HRT had successfully performed its duties in 2005.

He, however, warned about the great amount of external productions in television programmes and recommended a more detailed elaboration of the HRT Statute.

Ljevak said, among other things, that in 2006 Croatian Television was on the top of the list of public televisions in Europe according to viewer ratings.

HRT director-general Mirko Galic commended the HRT for its independence from political and financial circles.

He added that in 2005 the national broadcaster had a positive financial balance sheet.

During the subsequent debate, the clubs of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Party of Rights (HSP) dismissed the reports, describing them as a shameful document and an insult to parliamentarians.

The HSP pointed the finger at extremely high costs for the purchase of broadcasts of external production companies.

The HDZ claimed that the productivity of HRT employees had declined 6.5 percent in one year.

Clubs of opposition parties including the Social Democrats (SDP) and the Peasant Party (HSS) responded to the criticism from the ruling party labelling this as attempts by the HDZ to have a grip over the national broadcasting corporation.

The parliament wrapped up the sitting with the debate on the HRT on Wednesday evening and the current session will resume on Thursday.
