Govt. officials comment on topical issues during Question Time

ZAGREB, Jan 24 (Hina) - Addressing the Croatian parliament during Question Time on Wednesday, deputy Ratko Gajica of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) warned about the unresolved cases of property restitution, saying that some Croatian Serbs were unable to repossess their houses although their temporary occupants had been provided with alternative housing.

"How long will bullies be the law and enjoy the support of state institutions and individuals from those institutions," Gajica asked.

PM Ivo Sanader answered that he knew nothing of such cases and referred the deputy to relevant institutions, adding that the rule of law had to be respected.

Milanka Opacic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) accused Deputy PM Jadranka Kosor of ordering Jadranka Cigelj to vet candidates for the Council for the Development of Civil Society.

She wondered how long others would face the consequences of Kosor's failures, including the replacement of an assistant minister at her ministry and the annulment of a law granting war veterans' children certain privileges when enrolling at faculties.

Dismissing the accusations as lies, Kosor replied that it was Cigelj who had asked that the candidates be investigated and that this was evidenced by her signature on a note sent to intelligence services.

She said that she had been shocked to learn of Cigelj's request and that she had acted the following day because she believed that it was intolerable to disrupt the otherwise good relations between the government and organisations of civil society.
