ZAGREB, Jan 18 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks received Cuban Ambassador Norma Goicochea Estenoz and the newly-appointed Australian Ambassador Tracy Reid on Thursday, his office said in a statement.

During talks with the Cuban ambassador, Seks said that relations between Croatia and Cuba were good and that there were possibilities for more intensive cooperation. He praised the activities of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission, which is due to hold its fourth meeting this year.

Noting that Croatian President Stjepan Mesic's visit to Cuba in September last year to attend a Non-Aligned Movement summit was an important step towards the strengthening of the two countries' relations, Goicochea Estenoz said that Cuba also wanted closer ties with Croatia at parliamentary level.

The Cuban ambassador expressed hope that the speaker of the Croatian Parliament would accept the invitation by his Cuban counterpart to visit Cuba already this year.

In a separate meeting with the Australian ambassador, Seks said that the Croatian emigrant community in Australia served as a strong bridge between the two geographically distant countries. He stressed the need for boosting trade between Croatia and Australia, praising their cooperation within international organisations.

Reid expressed hope that the excellent relations between Croatia and Australia would further intensify during her term of office, reaffirming her country's interest in increasing trade and investment in Croatia.

Reid said that this was realistic to expect because of Croatia's increasing role in the region and the strengthening of its government institutions. She also said that the number of Australian tourists visiting Croatia had increased considerably in the last two years.
