ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament President Vladimir
Seks on Wednesday congratulated Hans-Gert Poettering on being elected President
of the European Parliament, expressing hope that the two parliaments would
further intensify their cooperation as part of Croatia's efforts to join the
European Union. Seks said in his message that this year Croatia
would continue comprehensive reforms aimed at structural adjustment of Croatian
society to EU standards.
"Our ultimate objective is to make it possible for Croatian citizens to
take part in elections for the European Parliament in 2009. I am confident
that the European Parliament, by fully supporting further enlargement, will
play a vital role in it," Seks said.
Poettering, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of German
Chancellor Angela Merkel, was elected in Strasbourg on Tuesday for the next two
and a half years, until the 2009 elections.
