ZAGREB, Jan 1 (Hina) - Thousands of Croatians gathered in city squares throughout the country to usher in the new 2007 year at open-air parties with concerts and fireworks displays being held in a festive atmosphere in all major cities.

About 30,000 people gathered in Zagreb's central square for an open-air New Year Eve party where local pop and rock bands held concerts. The Croatian capital also organised a fireworks display like those in major cities in the world.

Several thousand young Europeans who arrived in Zagreb for the 29th ecumenical meeting of the Taize community, also flocked to the city's Jelacic Square.

A large number of police officers and security as well as two ambulances were there to ensure that everything could proceed well.

A few thousand residents of Osijek greeted 2007 with cheers, kisses and dancing waltzes in the main square of this eastern city. Revellers were offered the cooked wine and tea.

Thousands of residents in the Croatian biggest seaport of Rijeka also flocked to the main square to welcome 2007 at a New Year Eve party in the open. The event's programme included concerts of pop and rock bands and singers.

Residents of Dubrovnik crammed the city's main street Stradun for a New Year Eve party. Festivities continued in other parts of this Adriatic resort.

At te very start of the new year, members of an association of Homeland War veterans traditionally lit candles on the mouth of Vuka River into the Danube in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar in memory of dead and missing Croatian soldiers.

There were no incidents during open-air New Year celebrations in the country. The police reported only about cases of people having been injured in firecrackers explosions and traffic accidents.
