Sanader said on Wednesday that he was withdrawing from government duties as well as from duties as the chief of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
He said today that after his consultations with President Stjepan Mesic about a new Prime Minister-designate and a new cabinet, he expected a swift appointment of the new government.
"There is a a parliamentary majority which won the confidence of the electorate at the elections in 2007 and we will justify this confidence fully," Sanader said at the session at which he also thanked reporters who covered his work.
He added that the parliamentary majority in a changed make-up to some extent would continue leading the country.
He said that this was also the position of President Mesic and that they were in unison on all the topics they had discussed.
On Wednesday, Sanader said that his successor would be Jadranka Kosor, Deputy Prime Minister in his cabinet and the HDZ's Deputy President.
He added that enough signatures of MPs had been ensured for proposing Kosor to this post.
