Croatian justice minister: Nothing to discuss over arrest warrant for MOL CEO

Autor: half
LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Hina) - Acting on the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) for the CEO of the Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, Zsolt Hernadi, is a judicial matter, not a political one, and there is nothing to discuss, Croatian Justice Minister Orsat Miljenic said in Luxembourg on Monday.

"There is nothing to discuss, it's a judicial matter and the judiciary will act within its powers," he said when asked by the press about the status of Croatia's request for Hernadi's extradition, for whom an Interpol Red Notice and an EAW have been issued.

The Croatian judiciary suspects Hernadi of having bribed former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader with EUR 10 million into giving MOL management rights in Croatia's oil and gas company INA, for which Sanader was sentenced last year to ten years' imprisonment pending appeal.

Miljenic was in Luxembourg to attend a meeting of European Union justice ministers. He welcomed the statement by European Commission Vice President Viviane Reding earlier today, ahead of the ministerial meeting, that the issue of Croatia's law on cooperation in judicial matters with the EU was solved because the Croatian parliament had amended it.

For us, that case ended long ago and I am glad that now an end has formally been put on it too through these statements, said Miljenic.

Asked if Croatia had raised the issue of equality of EU countries, given that those that were members before 2002 could impose time limits on EAW application, while those that joined after 2002 could not, the minister said, "It's not that simple, but it will be raised, but not that soon."

The EU justice ministers convened today to discuss personal data protection, a proposal to establish a European Public Prosecutor's Office, and protection from euro forgery.
