ZAGREB, May 23
(Hina) - More than 600 couples in Croatia want to
adopt a child while at the same time a small number of children is
being put up for adoption, Gordana Sobol of the ruling coalition's
Social Democratic Party said in parliament on Thursday during a debate
on a proposal to ratify the Convention on the Protection of Children
and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption.
Social Policy and Youth Minister Milanka Opacic said the ratification would enable adoption under clear rules.
Although the parliamentary groups endorsed the convention, the ruling parties warned of the complicated legal situation regarding adoption in Croatia.
Sobol said lists of adopting parents had finally been put in order and the status of children up for adoption defined.
