The aim of the royal couple's three-day visit is to expand and improve bilateral relations between the two countries, it was said.
After the national anthems were struck up, President Josipovic and his wife began talks with the Swedish royal couple, to be followed by talks between the official delegations. The Swedish delegation includes Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Environment Minister Lena Ek, among others.
Bildt was an international mediator during the wars in the former Yugoslavia. Between June and November 1995, when he co-chaired a peace conference in Dayton, he was the European Union's special envoy for the former Yugoslavia. From December 1995 to June 1997, he was the international community's High Representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
As part of the Swedish delegation's visit, Zagreb's Culture and Information Centre is organising Swedish Days on Tuesday and Wednesday, presenting Swedish poets and Umea, the European culture capital in 2014.
Later today, the Swedish royal couple will hold talks with Croatian Parliament Speaker Josip Leko and Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic. Tomorrow, they will visit the Ericsson Nikola Tesla and DOK-ING companies as well as attend the opening of an exhibition of Swedish sculptor Carl Milles at the Mestrovic Atelier.
An economic forum on how Sweden can be an economic partner to Croatia upon Croatia's EU accession will be held on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the Swedish royal couple will visit the coastal town of Zadar.
