HDZ leader says party discussing economic platform

Autor: half
OPATIJA, Jan 19 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) president Tomislav Karamarko said on Saturday the purpose of the strongest opposition party's two-day closed-door meeting which began in Opatija today was to homogenise the party and that it would focus on the its economic programme and the economic situation in the country, which he described as not at all optimistic, as well as to agree on a programme for upcoming local elections.

Asked by the press what he expected of the elections, Karamarko said the HDZ would make a quality step forward in comparison to previous results.

He said the party had about 6,500 new members and that "one feels the spirit of unity," adding that "dissonant tones" on some issues were "quite normal."

"The party isn't run with imperative tones, it's not run autocratically but in a democratic fashion. The party is indeed undergoing democratisation and I think this is being recognised."

Speaking of the economic situation, Karamarko said that according to the unions, 700 people lost their jobs every day.

He said the party would nominate its mayoral candidates in Zagreb, Rijeka and Osijek soon. He announced the HDZ would hold a convention on March 8, two and a half before local elections, when all candidates will be presented.
