Josipovic says speculation on Cacic's pardon harmful

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Dec 31 (Hina) - President Ivo Josipovic has described as harmful public speculation about a possible pardon of former First Deputy Prime Minister Radimir Cacic pending a decision whether he will serve in Croatia a prison sentence handed down by a Hungarian court for causing a traffic accident with two fatalities.

It is harmful to speculate that he will be exempt from punishment, either by a pardon or a different ruling by a Croatian court, Josipovic told Croatian Television on Sunday.

"What kind of state would consent to carrying out its punishment by having it not carried out?" the president wondered, adding that the courts should be let to do their jobs.

Speaking of a possible pardon, which is within the president's powers, Josipovic said Cacic would be treated as any other citizen.

Asked to comment on speculation that after serving his sentence Cacic could return to the government, the president said that everyone who had served their sentence was a citizen with all rights.

He said Cacic had been very prominent in the ruling coalition but that the coalition would have to take into account how the public would react if that happened.

Speaking of health education, Josipovic said the polemic and the way in which the Church took part in it did not exceed the boundaries of democratic discussion. "Maybe that discussion is welcome because our political culture lacks discussions with open and public confrontations, so I don't think that anything bad will come out of this."

He said all interested parties in the matter should be heard and certain adjustments made if necessary. He said however that health education should be introduced in schools and that perhaps Croatia lagged behind in this by a few decades.

Speaking of the possibility of a national unity government being mentioned in the media, the president said there was neither the need nor the conditions for that. Regarding the presidential election, he said that if he decided to run, he expected to be backed by the Social Democratic Party and all who had backed him so far.
