Benchmark March futures were up $3 a tonne at 1227 EST, at $1,387, ranging from $1,388 to $1,378. May was $2 weaker at $1,405, while the rest were flat to down $1. Volume was thin, at an estimated 2,229 lots as of 1200 EST. On the charts, near-term resistance was seen at today's high of $1,388 in the March contract, with strong psychological resistance at $1,400. Support was pegged at $1,372-$1,371. Traders brushed aside news that a senior Ivorian diplomat said on Wednesday the country's cocoa production in the current 1996/97 season would come in around 850,000-900,000 tonnes including the mid-crop because of heavy rains this year. "The forecast is in line with a lot of estimates we've seen," one trader said. "And already priced in the market. Additionally, Antoine Delon, the London representative for Ivory Coast commodities, told reporters at the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) meetings in London that the Ministry of Agriculture had just finalised the official estimate for the 1995/96 crop at 1.1 million tonnes including the mid-crop. Traders' estimates were around 1.2 million. 121114 MET dec 96
