The benchmark March contract slid through support at $1,385 a tonne, a double bottom on the charts, and managed to fill a gap between $1,382 and $1,379 late in the session. "There is no news," one trader said. "Cocoa is trading off the technicals." March delivery ended $25 a tonne lower, at $1,380, after ranging from $1,398 to $1,377. Spot December fell $11, to $1,331, while the outer months finished down $19 to $23. Although some traders said the March contract might have found a bottom after filling the gap and could start to work higher, a breach of the $1,375-$1,373 level may lead to a downturn toward $1,360. On the upside, traders said March would need to get past $1,400 to attract significant buying interest. Traders said a weaker trend on the British pound against the U.S. dollar also spurred some selling on the New York market today. Fundamentally, Refco In analyst Ann Prendergast said uncertainty about the size of the Ivorian crop, coupled with a world cocoa deficit in the 1996/97 season, should lend underlying support to the market. Volume was fairly light, at an estimated 6,559 lots. 051042 MET dec 96
