Of the 15,324 bales offered, 6.3 percent was passed in. Japanese and Chinese buyers were principal with support from Taiwanese and Western European operators. Merinos were mixed, with 19 and 25 micron up to one percent cheaper, 20 micron was one percent dearer and 21 micron was half a percent dearer. Skirtings were slightly dearer. Crossbreds of 27/28 microns were unchanged and 26 micron was 1.5 percent cheaper. Cardings were generally unchanged. There was some softening in local quotations on Friday, all currency-related, and the gap between selling prices in other European countries which have hitherto suffered from the pressure to remain within the Exchange Rate Mechanism, is beginning to narrow, they said. "The market is waiting for guidance from the raw wool auctions before adjusting its prices," one source said. 101057 MET dec 96
