Market sources said early gains, triggered by fears of rain damage in the Delta, may have been unjustified since the bulk of the crop is already out of the ground. USDA will issue its weekly crop condition report, later today. December delivery ended up 0.21 cent at 72.75 cents a lb after trading from 73.34 to 72.40. The deferred months closed unchanged to 0.33 firmer. The December contract once again pierced but then failed to hold key 73.00. Volume was estimated at a mere 6,800 lots, an indication that there is little faith in rallies. "If the market wants to move, better volume can be found to the downside," said Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc. Still, December remained supported at 72.00. Globally, weaker output in Pakistan, China and Uzbekistan continues to worry players. Sluggish demand, however, is helping to contain prices. 291101 MET oct 96
