But the December contract settled below Tuesday's close at 72.88, a tecnical sign that players are likely to sell Thursday, market sources said. Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc, said the failure to rally above 73.47, the ten-day moving average as of Tuesday, also signals near-term weakness. December ended at 73.08, up 0.20, having ranged from 73.20 to 72.55. The deferred months closed up 0.30 to 0.05 lower. Volume was estimated at 7,000 lots. Fundamentally, the recent low prices have stymied imports, which totaled only 997 bales last week, and boost exports. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will release its export data Thursday amid expectations for brisk sales. "The worst thing that could happen to this market is a strong export number because each and every week is critical to getting more on books," Johnson said. Modest sales would keep prices low enough to encourage weekly business while strong sales could buoy prices and ultimately halt business, she said. Additionally, the U.S. Census Bureau will release its monthly consumption report Thursday. 241045 MET oct 96
