Merino fleece prices were mixed, with the 19/25 micron indicators slightly dearer and 20/21m 0.5 percent dearer. The 22/23m categories were up to 0.5 percent cheaper while 24m was unchanged, WI said. Merino skirtings were generally unchanged. In crossbreds, 26m was slightly cheaper and 27m slightly dearer. The 28/29m classes were 1.0 percent dearer and 30/31m 0.5 percent dearer. In cardings, lambs were 2.0 percent dearer, locks 3.0 percent dearer and crutchings unchanged. WI said Japanese and Chinese interests were principal buyers with good support from Taiwan and Western Europe. Of 15,213 bales offered, 9.4 percent were passed in. "Heavy low-priced sales from two of the main Continental sources (of supply) have helped to prevent buying in the UK," one broker said. The recent strength of sterling has removed the opportunity to increase quotations in line with the cost of imported wool for blending while pushing up the price of UK exports, another added. The absence of major buyers from the market due to late holidays has also had a dampening effect on demand, brokers said. 301121 MET oct 96
