Metals slow at midsession, LME copper spread wider
LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuter) - Base metal trading was slow on
the LME on Friday, with little in the way of news to inspire
markets, and prices trended lower.
Traders said the copper market focused on the spreads, with
the cash/three months period now firmly in contango. This
benchmark spread was at $9/12, against $4 overnight and
backwardations earlier this week.
Forward spreads in end-1996 and early-1997, where
backwardations still prevail, were also softening.
"It is on the run now -- people are lending to get these
backs before they go," one trader said.
LME stocks fell by 2,900 tonnes, although a drawdown had
been anticipated so this was shrugged off by the market.
Forward prices struggled after an early failure yet again
near $1,950, and by the end of the kerb session the market was
testing the support around $1,920. Last trade was at $1,918, an
$18 a tonne loss from Thursday.
Softness percolated throughout the complex during the kerb,
and aluminium notched up another 2-1/4 year low of $1,403 before
last business at $1,406, down $22.
LME stocks rose by 4,825 tonnes, while IPAI August output
increased slightly, both as expected.
Nickel held in a narrow range, but tended towards the lower
end, with last morning business at $7,380, down $10. Stocks rose
594 tonnes, again as expected.
Inventory movements in lead and zinc were both within market
expectations and market interest was slow. Last lead business
was at $782, down $5, while zinc shed $2 at $1,033.50.
Tin eased to challenge the $6,100 level, a $19 loss, while
alloy was marked lower to $1,225/30 a tonne.
