LME copper above lows by midday, aluminium softer
LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuter) - Despite third Wednesday pricing,
trading in base metals remained largely routine up to the London
Metal Exchange (LME) recess, traders said.
After testing support towards $1,850, copper bounced back on
fairly brisk bouts of cash buying, while nickel failed to gain
on news of production cuts at Inco's Manitoba smelter.
Aluminium reached a fresh two-year low of $1,425 under light
liquidation but subsequently clawed back on consumer buying and
short covering.
Traders said they expected a period of consolidation if
copper and aluminium hold above their support around $1,820/30
and $1,400/$1,430.
"The market is still nervous to further falls, though after
managing to absorb the third Wednesday pricing it should adopt
some degree of stability," one trader commented.
Benchmark three months delivery copper was last at $1,865,
down on Friday's LME kerb close of $1,870. On the upside
chartists are expecting resistance at $1,875/80, followed by the
key level of $1,900.
Inco's failure to reach a contract agreement with workers at
their Manitoba plant saw nickel drift back. Traders said the
strike had already been factored into prices and believed there
was no shortage of available metal to the market.
An Inco spokesman said earlier on Monday that talks between
unions and management were continuing at its 50,000-tonne a year
operation.
The plant will remain shut until a collective agreement is
struck.
Last business was at $7,450, down from $7,560.
Downtrending charts continued to pressure aluminium, though
prices never seriously tested strong underlying support at
$1,400 during Monday morning. Last business was at $1,426, a
loss of $10.
Lead and zinc remained quiet and largely reflected the moves
of the copper market. Lead was last at $797 from $809, while
zinc settled at $1,025, a gain of $2.
Tin lost $10 to $6,150, while alloy was last quoted at
$1,235/45, against $1,246.
