LME aluminium, copper slump to key support
LONDON, Sept 10 (Reuter) - Aluminium prices slumped to their
lowest for nearly two months and copper to the lowest for over a
month on the London Metal Exchange (LME) on Tuesday as selling
pressure gathered pace as the morning session progressed..
Three month aluminium prices finished the morning kerb
session at the day's low so far of $1,456 a tonne, down $21 from
Monday and $2 above key technical support at $1,454.
A break below that level could prompt a sell-off to next
historical support at $1,424 based on mid-1994 levels.
A heavy flurry of selling from one quarter initiated the
move towards the end of the first morning ring before others
joined the fray. Some general buying did emerge around the lows
but it was not enough to lift a market apparently swamped by
near term bearish sentiment.
Traders said there was no fresh fundamental factor behind
the sell-off, although stocks continued to accumulate in LME
warehouses.
Aluminium stocks rose 4,700 tonnes on Tuesday and the total
could exceed one million tonnes before long unless physical
demand picked up quickly, traders said.
But data from the International Primary Aluminium Institute
(IPAI) was more bullish. The IPAI said July total producer
stocks fell 33,000 tonnes from June to 3.342 million tonnes.
Some analysts expected the total to rise, because producers
tend to re-stock during the quieter demand period in July.
Copper also came under increasing selling pressure during
the kerb, hitting a low of $1,910 at one stage before recovering
slightly to end the morning session at $1,916, still down $11.
Stocks fell 2,525 tonnes and remained low in historic terms
overall, but traders were nervous to the downside as much to the
upside, they said.
"It's still tough to call. We've had a spike and now we are
at the bottom end of the range," said one dealer.
Key support was pegged at $1,900/05, below which the market
is vulnerable to a move back to $1,790/800, dealers said.
The rest of the complex ended with limited losses except
lead, which rose slightly.
Nickel raced to a two-month high of $7,720 on the pre-market
as buy stops above resistance at $7,660 were triggered.
But the move quickly petered out and the market finished the
morning at $7,600, down $15.
Traders said the latest sharp gains in nickel were not based
on bullish fundamentals so much as speculative and fund buying
of options and futures.
"The physical nickel markets are still slow," said one
trader. "These moves have had more to do with speculative buying
than anyhting else."
In their latest weekly report, brokers Billiton Metals said
total reported nickel stocks were currently "comfortable" at
around 12 weeks' consumption.
"Any improvement in the price environment is likly to be
muted," the report concluded.
Zinc fell with the general trend, losing $11 to $1,022, but
lead, which is fundamentally tighter, gained $3 to $813.
Tin was last quoted at $6,220/30 from $6,235 while alloy
slipped to $1,260/65 from $1,280/85.
