The widely-watched December contract fell $12 per tonne, to finish at $1,354, a nearby support level. Trades were posted from $1,352 to $1,363. A mere 2,222 lots changed hands on the day. Traders said today's declines, which took out nearby support at $1,357, may prompt a test of last week's five-month low at $1,330. But many were reluctant to read too much into today's performance, suggesting that increasingly divergent world supply forecasts for the coming crop year had discouraged some participants from taking positions. While most estimates have called for sizable deficits in 1996/97, recent estimates have ranged from 150,00 tonnes put forth by Landell Mills on Tuesday to a projected shortfall of 225,000 tonnes seen by the International Cocoa Organization. "People just don't know what to believe anymore," said one trader. "No one even agrees on the size of last year's surplus." he added. "It is one of the major reasons why the market has taken a wait-and-see attitude," he added. 111033 MET sep 96
