Traders said short covering and keen manufacturer buying boosted prices, but an afternoon bout of chart-driven selling trimmed gains and kept the December contract below $1,370 a tonne resistance. "The market was very oversold," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "The maufacturers are taking advantage of the drop in prices." She added that despite improved Ivory Coast crop prospects, the likelihood of a cocoa deficit in 1996/97 would continue provide underlying support for the market. Benchmark December cocoa settled up $26 a tonne, at $1,362, after ranging between $1,369 and $1,336. March rose $21 to $1,394, while the rest ended $19 to $37 higher. On the charts, traders pegged December resistance at $1,390, with a subsequent upside target seen at $1,405. New York cocoa prices slid eight out of the last ten sessions, with the December contract falling to $1,336 Tuesday, its lowest settlement since March 27, weighed down by improved 1996/97 Ivorian crop estimates.
