"Chicago came down but the dollar went up which left prices unchanged from midday at the close, said one trader. Earlier European traders had been puzzled by the Malaysian market reaction to data from cargo surveyors Societe General de Surveillance (SGS) and Caleb Brett. SGS had put exports during May at 672,805 tonnes while Caleb Brett estimated 641,950 tonnes. Some traders had estimated exports at 630,000-650,000 tonnes, putting the SGS figure above this. However, the Malaysian market came down. "The SGS figure looked supportive at just above the range while Caleb Brett was within it, so we found the reaction in Malaysia a little puzzling," said one trader. By the close of business in Asia local traders were saying the data was within expectations, which led to the lower close. "They seem to be singing a different song to the one they started with," said another trader. However, others said the stronger dollar may have been behind the fall. "The figure did look supportive, but people price their goods in dollars and this may explain the fall," said a trader. At the close crude palm oil cif Europe was $2.50 down after Jun traded at $550 in a switch with Aug/Sep at $547.50. Among products RBD palm oil was $2.50 down while olein was $2.50 lower to unchanged with no further business reported. Soft oils were 1.50 guilders up across the board supported by the stronger dollar. In light trading soy oil fetched 105.25 guilders for Jun and 105.50 for July. Rape oil traded at 105 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill for Aug/Oct. Coconut oil closed $5 to $10 lower after Aug/Sep and Sep/Oct both traded at $625 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil closed $5 up to $2.50 down in a neglected market. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 031143 MET jun 97
