"This market keeps going down, down, down," said one trader. "There's enough cocoa around, technicals are bearish and the specs are still long. There's no reason for this market to go up." Benchmark July futures fell $12 a tonne on the day, to $1,379, near the bottom of today's $1,392-$1,376 range. Spot May ended $12 lower, at $1,368, while the back months sagged $5 to $10. After gapping $5 a tonne lower at the open, the market drifted in weaker territory for the bulk of the day. Some scale-down manufacturer buying emerged, briefly nudging some contracts above unchanged. But prices drifted back toward the lows after the London market closed in abbreviated trading ahead of a UK trade dinner. "The specs just kept liquidating," said one trader. "Not aggressively, just casual selling." Some traders said the recent downturn -- which has seen the July contract plummet $101 this week -- reflected the market's acceptance that supplies from Ivory Coast would be better than previously expected. On Wednesday, broker GNI cut its 1996/97 world cocoa deficit estimate to 33,000 tonnes from its earlier forecast of 180,000 tonnes due to an increased production estimate for top-grower Ivory Coast. They put total 1996/97 Ivorian output at 1.15 million tonnes, including a 160,000-tonne mid-crop. The International Cocoa Organization also reduced its production deficit estimate to 115,000 tonnes for 1996/97, down from its earlier estimate of 225,000 tonnes. Technically, July support was seen at $1,365-1,360, while resistance was pegged near today's high ot $1,392. Major resistance awaited at $1,400, followed by $1,418. An estimated 7,388 lots were exchanged on the day. The London market will be closed on Monday for a local holiday, reopening on Tuesday 051121 MET may 97
