After gapping lower at the open, the market hovered in weaker territory throughout the day. Some trade buying surfaced in the $1,390-1,395 area basis July, but overall interest in the market was scant. "The market is still suffering a technical breakdown," said one trader. "It's chart driven in the short-term." Benchmark July futures fell $9 a tonne, to $1,391, near the bottom of today's 1,390-1,404 range. Today's close marked the first time since early March that July has settled below the widely-watched $1,400 level. Most traders shrugged off news the International Cocoa Organization cut its estimate of the world's cocoa supply deficit. The ICCO put the shortfall at 115,000 tonnes in the 1996/97 crop year, down from a 225,000 deficit seen earlier this year. Technically, cocoa's stance looked increasingly gloomy after falling $85 in five days. To reverse the trend, July would need to settle above $1,400, traders said.
