Benchmark July futures finished down $6 a tonne, to $1,469, after ranging from $1,494 to $1,466. Spot May -- which goes off the board in 2-1/2 weeks -- rose $13, to $1,465, while the back months fell $7 to $20. The market gapped higher at the opening, as expected, on the heels of a strong performance in London overnight. Speculative buying brought July to a peak of $1,494 -- partially filling a key overhead chart gap between $1,480 and $1,501. Some traders said July's inability to completely fill the gap may have weighed on sentiment. "We didn't hold the gap area well and there was not that much volume," said one trader. "When people saw there was no follow-through buying, they lightened up." Traders said arbitrage-linked selling, particularly in the forward months, also kept the market under pressure. Strength in the U.S. dollar against the British pound, may have prompted arbitrage to buy cheaper sterling-denominated LIFFE futures, they said. By comparison, London's active July contract gained 11 stg on Friday, to end at 1,054 stg. Technically, traders pegged July support at $1,456, a double bottom on the charts. To the upside, they said July would need to get through $1,476-$1,478 before filling the remaining gap between $1,494 and $1,501. 280950 MET apr 97
