"Technically and fundamentally there is nothing to support the market at this point," said Dean Witter analyst Corey Bell. "It's well understood that there's cocoa available if someone wants to take delivery and it's reflected in certified warehouse stocks." Benchmark July futures plummeted to a low of $1,397 a tonne before light industry buying emerged, traders said. By the close, July stood at $1,414, down $40 -- or about three percent on the day. Spot May fell $34, to $1,408, while the back months closed $37 to $41 lower. Prices rose at the outset, but July's inability to get past chart resistance at $1,469 and the market's inability to follow-through on the upside set the stage for today's sharp reversal, traders said. Downward momentum accelerated after the July contract slid through support at $1,440 and then $1,410. Some traders said there may have been a delayed reaction to yesterday's news that industry sources in Abidjan were predicting the Ivorian 1996/97 main crop (Oct-April) would exceed a million tonnes. Additionally, Ivorian analysts pegged preliminary mid-crop (May-Sept) estimates at 180,000 tonnes. Many earlier estimates projected a main crop of less than one million tonnes and a mid-crop under 150,000 tonnes. In the 1995/96 season season, Ivory Coast, the world's top grower of cocoa, produced a record total yield of 1.2 million tonnes. 301018 MET apr 97
