"It was a very quiet day," one trader said, "and it was definitely a local market." Benchmark July futures finished down $15 at $1,454 a tonne after ranging from $1,468 to $1,452. Spot May -- which goes off the board in 2-1/2 weeks -- fell $23 to $1,442, while the back months closed $3 to $16 lower. Volume was extremely light, with only an estimated 2,514 lots changing hands. The market gapped lower at the opening, as expected, on the heels of a weak performance in London overnight. But with little interest outside of the ring, prices spent the bulk of the day drifting in a narrow $10 range until the late-session push by locals. Some traders said cocoa was likely to remain subdued this week, with many U.S. market participants traveling to London for an industry dinner. Traders brushed aside news that industry sources in Abidjan predicted on Monday that the Ivorian 1996/97 main crop (Oct-April) would exceed a million tonnes but not match 1.04 to 1.05 million tonnes seen in last year's record season. Local analysts pegged preliminary mid-crop (May-Sept) estimates at 180,000 tonnes. But said those forecasts could be revised depending on rainfall. In the 1995/96 season season, Ivory Coast, the world's top grower of cocoa, produced a record total yield of 1.2 million tonnes. 291046 MET apr 97
