Dunavant, having lingered in negative territory for most of the session, dealers said. "Nobody wants to be short in front of a Dunavant speech because he's always bullish at this time year," a trader said. Dunavant spoke to industry sources at a World Cotton Conference in San Francisco, just after the market closed. Most-active May cotton settled at 75.61 cents a lb, having ranged from 76.20 to 75.25 cents. The back months finished 0.30 lower to 0.08 higher. Volume was estimated at 8,500 lots compared to Thursday's official 14,843 lots. A rally in soybean futures sparked fund buying on the open which carried the May contract to the day's high. Speculative and local selling emerged and tried to pressure May under 75.00 cents, where sell stops are believed to rest, dealers said. Scale-down trade buying limited losses at 75.20 cents in May. Memphis-based merchant Allenberg was cited as a light scale-down buyer in the afternoon, trading sources said. 170946 MET mar 97
