"It's very thin. There's barely any actual business being conducted - this all looks purely technical," a trader noted. Three months copper was last at $2,281 per tonne, up $3 from Monday's kerb close and off the day's high of $2,288. Meanwhile the premium of cash to three months copper flared gently to $70/$73, up about $10 from the morning. Light borrowing in the early parts of March and April were boosting the spread, which has come down from highs above $300 in recent weeks, traders noted. The widening spread and a small LME stocks drawdown of 1,100 tonnes was providing a little support for the market. Some dealers said they had expected more metal to leave LME warehouses and were looking ahead to further drawdowns in the future. "A lot of metal was attracted to LME warehouses because of the recent high backwardation, and it's going to drift out again," a dealer said. Aluminium prices also pushed higher, helped by a 5,050-tonne decline in stocks and copper's upside. It finished up $11 at $1,581, near the day's highs and close to interim $1,580/85 resistance. Nickel tumbled a low of $7,640, the lowest in two weeks, despite a modest stocks drop of 120 tonnes. But prices then bounced strongly to finish the kerb at $7,710, down $40. Zinc was barely changed at $1,219, down $0.50, after a stocks rise of 1,125 tonnes. Lead ticked up $4 to $659, boosted by a stock decline of 550 tonnes. Tin was just firmer at $6,060, up $35, after a drawdown of 95 tonnes.Alloy was last quoted at $1,508/$1,512, an increase of $18,despite a smalll rise in stocks of 20 tonnes. 181526 MET feb 97
