Swedish minister says Pride Parade ban in Belgrade is discrimination

Autor: half
BELGRADE, Oct 6 (Hina) - The European Union will not accept inequality and homophobia, Swedish Minister for EU Affairs Birgitta Ohlsson said in Belgrade on Saturday addressing the participants in "Parade between four walls", an event held instead of Pride Parade, which the Serbian Interior Ministry banned on Thursday.

Pride was banned in a European city and that constitutes discrimination. That's not the Europe I want to live in, she said, calling on all politicians to oppose intolerance.

Ohlsson had announced earlier she would come to Belgrade to attend Pride Parade, saying today she was disappointed by the ban and that all citizens must have the right to stand up and say proudly and freely who and what they are, Belgrade's media reported.

I support EU enlargement but that entails certain obligations when it comes to human and minority rights, freedom of assembly and speech. The Serbian government has the obligation to fulfil its duties when it comes to human rights, said Ohlsson.

Dutch member of the European Parliament Marije Cornelissen said the Pride ban was a big disappointment and that the Serbian government had failed the first test by letting hooligans win.
