Main hearing in Kerestinec war crimes trial held

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Hina) - Wartime military police commander Mate Lausic has testified at the trial of Stjepan Klaric, commander of the former prisoners-of-war camp in Kerestinec, that he heard about the "disastrous situation" there from Josip Perkovic, the then assistance defence minister.

On Perkovic's orders, the 66th battalion of the military police then took over the camp and the International Red Cross was allowed permanent access there, Lausic told the Zagreb County Court on Friday.

Lausic said Perkovic called him in April 1992 and ordered that the military police take over all those held in detention centres, prisons or military barracks.

Perkovic told him that the then President Franjo Tudjman and Defence Minister Gojko Susak were upset over a Red Cross report which said the situation at Kerestinec was "disastrous" because an inspection had found objects for the mistreatment of prisoners and that there had been torture.

The witness said Perkovic's tone indicated that the situation was "very unpleasant" for Croatia.

Perkovic mentioned that the crimes took place in the so-called Black Room, but Lausic was unable to find any traces of torture there later.

Lausic said Klaric was eventually relieved of duty as the Kerestinec camp's commander "because of a series of faults, including the messiness of the place and the guards, and because he did not wield authority."
