Parliament has no programme for totalitarianism victims remembrance day

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Aug 22 (Hina) - Although the parliamentary Presidency concluded in April, when it decided that parliament would no longer sponsor commemorations at Bleiburg, that Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, August 23, would be observed more actively, parliament has prepared no programme to mark the event, which the opposition's Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) says represents an ideological division of victims.

Speaker Boris Sprem told reporters on that occasion that parliament would discuss in the autumn legislative amendments that would stipulate that November 18, alongside commemorating the tragedy of Vukovar, would also be a remembrance day for all Croatians killed for freedom and independence.

Acting Speaker Josip Leko told Hina on Wednesday he did not know what exactly Sprem meant when he said that Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes would be observed more actively, adding that parliament and its committees had no special plans for tomorrow but that someone would probably make a statement on parliament's behalf.

The HDZ plans to observe August 23 at all party levels by laying wreaths at the graves of the post WW2 victims, at Goli Otok island, and at the Jasenovac memorial site.

The strongest opposition party's spokeswoman, Silvana Oruc Ivos, told Hina the government was ideologically dividing victims and that this constituted a violation of their human rights and those of their families.

She said that even though it had adopted European resolutions, Croatia had still not marked the graves of the post WW2 period victims.

Croatia observes the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of All Totalitarian Regimes since June 2011.
