SARAJEVO, Dec 7 (Hina) - Three hundred and nine UN peace keepers
were still blocked at Serb-controlled Bosnian areas despite
promises from Serb commanders two days ago to UN commander, Lt.
Gen. Michael Rose.
One hundred and five French, 40 Russian and 82 Ukrainian
soldiers were blocked by Serbs at UN-monitored weapons centres
around Sarajevo. Twenty-seven UN military observers and 55 Canadian
'blue helmets' were being kept in custody.
Sarajevo UNPROFOR headquarters said they could not confirm the
exact number of the UN troops being held captive.
In Bosnia there were UN soldiers who were not under the
command of Sarajevo headquarters. The three UN military observers
who were taken captive at the Banja Luka airport, did not belong to
the UNPROFOR command in Sarajevo. One of the detainees is a
Jordanian officer who's in a poor state of health, but the Serbs
did not allow him to be evacuated to a UN hospital.
Bosnian Serbs twice yesterday attacked UN troops in Bosnia.
They fired five mortar shells and two anti-aircraft missiles
at a UN observing post at Kalesija, northern Bosnia. There were no
casualties but the attack destroyed the post. The UN did not ask
NATO to for action over the incident.
The other attack happened in Gorazde, eastern Bosnia, when
Serbs opened mortar and small arms fire at a British UN patrol. The
British UN troops returned fire. The skirmish left no casualties.
Serbs yesterday seized five cannons from a UN-monitored arms
collection site in the Sarajevo area and then returned to the
scene, UNPROFOR sources said today.
UN officials said they had sent a 'strong protest' to the Serb
stronghold of Pale over the cannons being stolen.
