SARAJEVO, Oct 8 (Hina) - UN Protection Force representatives this
evening confirmed that the Serbs, situated at their strongholds at
the Jewish Cemetery, had fired at civilians in the centre of
Sarajevo on Saturday afternoon.
A spokesman for UNPROFOR, Major Herve Gourmellon, said the
investigation showed that Serb forces located in two houses near
the Jewish Cemetery had opened fire from machine-guns.
The Serb forces opened fire at the area around Hotel Holiday
Inn three times today. One Sarajevan was killed and one seriously
wounded in the Serb fire at a tram at 12:23 hrs today, while four
civilians were wounded in another Serb attack on a tram at 12:25.
Some ten minutes later the Serb gunmen fired again at
Sarajevans injuring at least two people in the same area.
The exact number of the wounded is still unknown. According to
the first UNPROFOR reports, eight Sarajevans were either seriously
or lightly injured.
The UNPROFOR command in Sarajevo today sent a sharp protest to
the Serb side because of the unprovoked attack on civilians at the
very centre of Sarajevo.
The UN peace keepers patrolling in the area around Hotel
Holiday Inn (in the Sarajevo section of Marijin Dvor) did not
return fire after the attack, because they did not know from where
the fire had been opened, the UNPROFOR sources said.
The Sarajevo authorities decided to suspend the tram traffic
in the city until guarantees for the safety of the tram passengers
might be granted.
