GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ON CONTROL OF UN CHECKPOINTS

ZAGREB, Aug 8 (Hina) - Deputy Foreign Minister Ivo Sanader is hoping that the blockade of UN checkpoints will not damage the excellent bilateral relations between Croatia and the countries whose troops are taking part in the peace-keeping mission. At a meeting of Croatian Government representatives, diplomats from the countries which had contributed troops to the UN mission and diplomats of Security Council members, Sanader asked for understanding for the "plight of refugees." He also lent his support to the refugees' demand for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions. At the meeting Croatian Government officials detailed the August 4 Agreement between the Croatian Government and UNPROFOR regulating the passage of UN personnel and vehicles through UN checkpoints. The meeting was told the agreement was being implemented without difficulties at seven checkpoints. The Government was negotiating with the Association of Refugees for opening additional checkpoints. UNPROFOR is expected to have deployed security officers at all checkpoints by tomorrow. Under the agreement, officers are expected to work with Croatian police. UNPROFOR vehicles can be searched at the request of the Croatian police. If a driver fails to account for all the goods, the police can stop the vehicle from entering the occupied area.
