SKOPJE, June 15 (Hina) - Members of the Serbian military crossed
the Macedonian border two days ago and set up a camp at Kriva
Palanka, some 250 metres on Macedonian territory.
Macedonian media said on Wednesday that the Serbian troops had
in fact taken control of strategic hilltops overlooking the
surrounding countryside and entrenched themselves there.
Unofficial sources in Skopje said that Macedonian troops were
at the scene, but only as observers.
There has been no official response from the Macedonian
government yet.
The head of the UNPROFOR press service has officially
confirmed that the Macedonian border had been violated by Serbian
military patrols.
The recently appointed UN representative for Macedonia, Hugo
Ansen, said in a statement published in today's issue of the
leading daily newspaper "Nova Makedonija" that the Macedonian
government and UNPROFOR should take such border violations
seriously although no use of fire arms had been registered.
