ZAGREB, May 1 (Hina) - During his visit to South American
countries Croatian deputy prime minister and foreign minister Dr.
Mate Granic is scheduled to visit today the Republic of Chile.
Chile was the first South American country to officially
recognize the Republic of Croatia on January 16, 1992. The
diplomatic relations between the two countries were established
in August 1992.
Strong connections have been developing between the
parliaments of the two countries since the autumn of 1991 when
the chairman of the Croatian House of Representatives (at the
time Croatia was still in the former Yugoslavia), Dr. Zarko
Domljan visited the Chilean parliament. In the Chilean parliament
a Croatian-Chilean group has been also founded whose head is
Baldo Prokurica, a parliamentary member of Croatian origin.
Croatian large diaspora in Chile with about 130,000 members
of Croatian origin has contributed very much to the good
diplomatic relations and friendship between the two countries.
The Croatian immigrants, gathered in ethnical communities and
societies in Chile, represent an important link between Croatia
and Chile in developing better diplomatic and economic relations.
