ZAGREB, May 11 (Hina/Reuter) - The United States has warned rebel
Croatian Serbs of serious consequences if they renew attacks on
Zagreb and threaten US installations there.
US ambassador Peter Galbraith said today that following last
week's attacks on the Croatian capital he had written to Serb
leaders in Knin warning them that any further attacks on US
facilities would be punished.
"We made clear to the Knin Serbs that were these official
American facilities to be hit, it would have severe consequences
for those who ordered such attacks," Galbraith told a press
conference in Zagreb.
"We made clear to the authorities in Knin the fact that
rockets launched on Zagreb landed in close proximity to the US
embassy and that rockets (targeting) Zagreb airfield landed near
the MASH hospital," he said.
Galbraith would not specify the form of punishment, but said
it could involve some kind of military action.
"I'll draw your attention to the fact that in the past,
American presidents have considered attacks on American troops and
facilities (abroad) to be very similar to attacks on the United
States itself," Galbraith said.
