FOREIGN MINISTER GRANIC RESPONDS TO JOURNALISTS' QUESTIONS

Autor:
ZAGREB, March 27 (Hina) - After today's meeting with the Contact Group officials and of the U.N. Security Council representatives, where he informed those present of the contents of his letter to U.N. Secretary General Boutros-Ghali, the Croatian Foreign Minister, Mate Granic, responded to questions from journalists. "This letter says clearly that Croatia won't accept those resolutions," Granic said, when asked how Croatia would act in the event that the Security Council disregarded his letter when bringing forth its resolutions on new UN peace forces. Minister Granic emphasised that "there were three things which we still disagreed on". "Firstly, we want the Resolution's headline to contain, 'Republic of Croatia'. Secondly we want precise definitions of the mechanisms for controlling the borders, and thirdly, we want one paragraph to clearly state that the present UNPROFOR mandate in Croatia terminates on March 31 this year," Granic said. One question was directed at the issue of whether during talks on the new mandate the notion of "control of borders" was defined. "During the whole time Croatia, of course had stricter positions than our interlocutors," he said, emphaisisng that Croatian officials showed very clearly how far they were prepared to go. Asked if his letter to Boutros-Ghali would be submitted to the U.N. Security Council in the same manner as Ghali's report, Granic said: "Of course, that letter will be immediately presented as an official document on behalf of the Republic of Croatia."
