ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - The newly-appointed UN Force Commander,
Gen. Bernard Janvier, today officially took over from Gen. Bertrand
de Lapresle and there was a ceremony to mark the event.
Also present at the event was UN special envoy for the former
Yugoslavia, Yasushi Akashi.
Commenting on the success of his mandate during the year, De
Lapresle explained how the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina in that
country was a reality, and that the cease-fire, however fragile,
was still holding.
Refering to Croatia, he said he was happy with level at which
the cease-fire was holding, and was equally pleased with how the
implementation of the economic agreement was coming along.
General De Lapresle also honoured the death of 140 UNPROFOR
soldiers who had died in the past three years and the 1204 injured.
Aksashi thanked General De Lapresle for his contribution to
the UNPROFOR mission.
General Janvier is the fifth UNPROFOR commander assigned to
the former Yugoslavia, others in the past included Satish Nambiar,
an Indian, Sweden's Lars-Eric Wahlgren, and French general Jean
Cot.
