ZAGREB, Feb 27 (Hina) - Croatian President Franjo Tudjman met his
Turkish counterpart, Suleyman Demirel, in Zagreb this evening.
"We have agreed that we want peace, stability and cooperation
on the Balkans. We will continue to cooperate with Croatia to this
end," Demirel told reporters after the talks.
Demirel said that Croatia and Turkey had already laid firm
foundations for good relations.
"First of all, we have addressed the crises in Bosnia-
Herzegovina and occupied Croatian territories, as well as Croatia's
decision to cancel the UNPROFOR mandate. I have told President
Demirel that by cancelling the UNPROFOR mandate Croatia does not
want to solve the problem of its occupied territories by war but we
want to accelarate the peaceful resolution of the crisis," Tudjman
said.
"The termination of UNPROFOR's mandate does not mean war. On
the contrary, prolonging the occupation of Croatian areas poses a
threat of war," he added.
"President Demirel has shown understanding for the Croatian
stance and Croatia will have Turkey's support in its bid to step up
the process of resolving the problem peacefully," Tudjman said.
"We would probably agree to make a new agreement with the
international community - without extending the UNPROFOR mandate -
that some special international troops should be deployed along the
border between Croatia and Serbia. The task of monitors already in
Croatia could be to see who was for a peaceful settlement and who
was provoking a war. In this respect, President Demirel and I are
largely in agreement," Tudjman said.
"Everything should be done to bring about a peaceful
settlement in Bosnia-Herzegovina," Tudjman stressed.
Tudjman accepted with pleasure Demirel's invitation to visit
Ankara.
Commenting on his cancellation of today's trip to Sarajevo,
Demirel said there was no airplane available to fly him from the
southern Croatian port city of Split to Sarajevo.
He added that despite two failures to visit the Bosnian
capital, he would make a third attempt to travel there.
