SARAJEVO, Feb 25 (Hina) - A UN transport aircraft was sprayed with
by small-arms fire at 10:30 this morning while descending into
Sarajevo airport, the UN in Sarajevo said.
An examination of the plane, an Ukrainian Ilyusin 76, revealed
what seemed to be two bullet holes, the UN said, adding that no one
had been injured.
This is the first attack on a UN plane after the reopening of
Sarajevo airport two months ago.
According to spokesman Herve Gourmelon, the airport was not
shut down after the incident. UN and UNHCR aircraft kept landing
all day, and tomorrow's schedule would also be respected.
Investigation was underway.
The incident came almost on the eve of Turkish President
Demirel's visit to Sarajevo, scheduled for Monday.
Demirel's last attempt to visit Sarajevo three months ago
failed because the Serbs would not guarantee the safety of his
plane.
