INVITING PEOPLE TO SETTLE IN E SLAVONIA IS UNFORTUNATE MISTAKE - K

Administrator for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmium described local attempts to populate the area with Serb refugees from other parts of Croatia as "an unfortunate mistake". "This is not the way to regain mutual trust," General Jacques Klein said after talks with a Croatian Vice Premier in charge of human rights, Ivica Kostovic. He added that Serbia kept broadcasting propaganda inviting Serbs to settle in the eastern Slavonia area. "I believe this to be a mistake, as it further complicates the situation and confuses the people living in the area," stressed Klein, adding that "everyone should understand, including those who think they might settle in the area, that the future of the region lies within Croatia." Klein said that the mutual goal of the Transitional Administration and Croatian authorities was "the reintegration of eastern Slavonia into Croatia, the protection of rights of the Serb minority and ways in which it may be implemented". Klein and Kostovic discussed establishing and training a joint police force in the Croatian Danubian area and the possible help of the World Bank and other organizations in reconstructing the area. They also discussed government plans of for the reconstruction of the railway system and other infrastructure. Klein "was shown a plan on the reconstruction of Vukovar which will be formally presented by the Croatian Government," Kostovic said, adding that "inter-communication and legal issues" had been resolved during the talks.
