ZAGREB, Feb 12 (Hina) - "VJESNIK" journalist Ivan Sabic writes in
today's issue of the paper about two statements by Jacques Klein,
the head of the United Nations Transitional Administration in
Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srijem.
The first statement, directed to the local Serbs, says: 'The
only choice you have here as Serbs is either to leave or become
Croatian citizens in a year'.
If Klein was to remain by his statement and if he had means to
carry out his decisions, it would be clear that the attempt of the
Serb side to keep the Croatian Danubian area under the formal and
informal domination would be unsuccessful, Sabic says.
The second statement by Klein arouses, however, Sabic's
doubts: 'If I had a checkbook, I would not need military forces.
Economy is the key. It is in the interest of both sides. Croatia
will get its territory back and the Serbs will have an open
border'.
'Such a standpoint cannot be the basis for the creation of
conditions aimed at overcoming the current situation', Sabic says.
'Klein does not have a checkbook, but his first statement has
a vast political importance', Sabic concludes.
