SARAJEVO, 27 Nov (Hina) - The newly-appointed head of the U.N.
Mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Elizabeth Rehn, on Thursday stated
that the reorganisation of the judicial system in Bosnia-
Herzegovina would be one of the main tasks of her mandate.
Rehn is paying a visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina as the UN human rights
special rapporteur for the former Yugoslavia.
She said that the judiciary in Bosnia-Herzegovina was very
"corrupt" and that the international community should ensure
measures for its reorganisation.
This should be performed through a special programme for training
just like it was done with police forces, she told a news
conference.
She said that she viewed her appointment to her new post, announced
last night at UN headquarters in New York, as both great
commendation and great challenge.
Commenting on results of her current mission during which she
visited Doboj, Bijeljina and Srebrenica (towns under Bosnian Serb
control), Rehn said that the process of the return of refugees was
impermissibly slow. She is planning to visit Mostar and
Tomislavgrad as well.
There is still no progress in that field, she said, adding that the
current property laws had to be changed if the return of refugees
was to be accomplished.
She also supported the coordination of efforts of the international
community and all sides in Bosnia-Herzegovina, so that numerous
mass graves could be investigated and truth about the fate of a
large number of missing people discovered.
