SARAJEVO, Nov 25 (Hina) - According to the UN Mine Action Centre
(UNMAC) 1,002 people have become the victims of mines in Bosnia-
Herzegovina since 1 January 1996. Out of the total, 219 people have
been killed, 539 severely injured and 244 lightly injured, the
Bosnian Croat news agency Habena said on Tuesday.
Eighteen thousand and twenty six mine fields have been registered
in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and about 250,000 mines planted. However,
it is the Centre's estimate that there are about three million
unregistered mines planted in Bosnia-Herzegovina during the war.
About 50,000 mines have been removed in the past two years.
Providing the mines are removed under the present tempo, it would
take about ten years to remove only the mines from registered and
marked mine fields, or 100 and more years to remove the three
million unregistered mines.
