BENKOVAC, Mar 8 (Hina) - The President of the Croatian Parliament Vlatko
Pavletic on Saturday uncovered in Benkovac (about 40 kilometres to the east
of the coastal town of Zadar) a tablet bearing the inscription "Town of
Benkovac", placed on the building of the town's administration, thus
symbolically marking Benkovac's status as a town.
Benkovac was liberated during the "Storm" military action, in the
summer of 1995.
On this occasion, Pavletic said that there were many duties ahead of
Croatia, which those who would be elected at the forthcoming elections would
have to solve. "Integral Croatia, with all its characteristics, differences
and various interests, guaranteed safety to all its citizens", he said, and
added that "no one can shape our fate any more, but it is important that we
all within the Croatian corpus, regardless of individual differences, get
used to living with each other".
"We are not even aware that we have a higher standard of living than
what the circumstances we have been through would allow", Pavletic said,
adding that "we must draw out the maximum out of our needs and
possibilities".
Croatia's biggest commendations came from abroad, he said, adding that
as regarded political stability, Croatia was at the very top among the 29
countries in transition.
